Schengen Rights

The Schengen Information System (SIS) concerns you. Learn about your rights and how SIS works.

If you know of an alert and which Member State has entered it into SIS, we advise you to contact the authorities of that State directly in order to get a direct and faster reply. In Portugal, the right to access, rectification or erasure of personal data from SIS is exercised by SIRENE National Bureau (SNB).

Warning!

It is NOT NECESSARY to obtain a declaration from SIRENE National Bureau on your data in the SIS before applying for a residence permit under Article 88 of Law 23/2007 of 4 July.

All requests to access, rectification or erasure of personal data from SIS addressed to Sirene National Bureau must be sent by mail to the following address:

For this purpose, you can use the following application forms:

Important remarks:

  • Applications must be legible; if handwritten, they must be in BLOCK PRINTING LETTERS;
  • Applications submitted by e-mail ARE NOT ACCEPTED;
  • A LEGIBLE and CERTIFIED COPY of the biographical part of the identification document (e.g. passport, residence permit, etc.) must be attached, failing which the application will be rejected;
  • Applicants will be asked to correct any shortcomings or omissions within 10 days. If they do not reply satisfactorily, the application will be filed;
  • The authentication of the identity document may be provided in the following entities:
    • CTT
    • Notaries
    • Registry offices
    • Parish councils
    • Lawyers
    • Solicitors
  • If the data subject is represented by a lawyer or solicitor, the power of attorney must specify the powers to exercise the rights of access within Schengen Information System;
  • Applications regarding minors may be submitted by their legal representatives, attaching certified copies of their identity documents;
  • If more than 60 days have elapsed since you submitted your application form to SIRENE National Bureau to access, rectify or erase your personal data in the Schengen Information System, we regret to inform you that it is currently not possible to meet the reply deadlines.

The personal data collected are processed exclusively for managing requests for information and clarification purposes addressed to SIRENE National Bureau. The data processing stems from the legal obligations provided in article 3(1)(i) and article 5(2)(h) of Decree-Law 122/2021 of 30 December. Personal data processed for this purpose will be kept for a maximum period of 6 months, in paper form, and 2 years, in digital form, after the request has been replied.
